
If you’ve heard the term “structural integration” but aren’t quite sure what it means, you’re not alone. It’s often compared to massage, stretching, or other forms of bodywork, but structural integration has a different focus: looking at how the body is organized and how its different parts work together.
Structural integration is a form of hands-on bodywork that works primarily with the body’s fascia—the connective tissue that surrounds and supports muscles, bones, nerves, and other structures throughout the body.
Rather than focusing only on the place that feels tight or uncomfortable, a structural integration practitioner looks at the body as a whole.
Your Body Is Connected
Think about what happens when you develop a habit such as sitting at a desk for hours, carrying a child on the same hip, favoring one leg after an injury, or repeatedly performing the same movements at work.
Your body is remarkably adaptable. It finds ways to accommodate what you ask it to do.
Over time, however, those adaptations can influence posture and movement throughout the body. A restriction in one area may change how another area moves. That is one reason the location where you feel discomfort isn’t always the only area worth considering.
Structural integration takes this whole-body relationship into account.
The Role of Fascia
Fascia forms a continuous network of connective tissue throughout the body. It helps support and connect different structures while allowing them to move in relationship to one another.
Structural integration uses intentional, hands-on techniques to work with the fascial system and explore areas where movement may feel restricted or inefficient.
The goal isn’t simply to make a tight muscle feel looser for a few hours. The broader intention is to support more balanced, coordinated movement throughout the body.
More Than Posture
Structural integration is often associated with posture, but posture is only part of the picture.
A practitioner may also look at how you stand, walk, breathe, shift your weight, rotate, bend, or perform movements that are part of your everyday life.
Instead of asking only, “Where does it hurt?” structural integration asks a bigger question:
How is your entire body organizing itself to move through the world?
That whole-body perspective is at the heart of structural integration.
